Room 3's Cards for Gala

Room 3 have been using their writing skills to write some very important people some letters lately. This has been so we have an awesome product to sell at Gala.

We decided we could make Christmas Cards to sell to our whanau and friends at Gala so that they were sorted for Christmas time. We thought long and hard about how we could decorate them and thought why get our local talent involved so asked Oasis's Dad Uncle Bonce, if he could help us out.

We sent Uncle Bonce some letters asking him if he would mind helping us decorate our Christmas Cards, and he was more than happy to.

Before we started though we needed some card! Thankfully Miss D'Ath knew that Hitchy's mum (Mummy Hitchy), sells craft products so we all wrote her letters asking if we could please buy some card and envelopes off her. We must have sounded like super friendly tamariki because Mummy Hitchy sent us the card, and told us we could have it for free as part of a donation to the fixing up of our school pool!

We also had a very generous donation of beautiful stickers from Nanny Vienna.

So on Monday after our Whakarewa Run we had Aunty Ali, and Uncle Bonce come into class and help us decorate our awesome looking cards!

Room 3 tamariki had a whole lot of fun! Keep an eye out for some Thankyou's in the mail those of you who have been super generous with your time, skills, and products!

Also keep an eye out for our awesome Cards selling at Gala this weekend! They are selling for $2 each! (You will want to get in quickly because they look amazing!)

Bugs in the water!

Yesterday we were very lucky to have enjoyed the sunshine whilst being outside in it!

We all headed up to the Whangawehi River on bus at 11am, and walked up from the bridge to the rapids.

Once there we had a quick discussion with Shane (Our bug expert), about what sort of bugs we want to find, whether it is good or not to find bugs in our water, and what makes our water healthy.

The water was looking reasonably clean, however there weren't many bugs to be found. We all had a look at our identification sheets, and knew what we were all looking for so we began our exploration of the river.

Due to it being a very hot day it was a big relief to be able to get into the water.

We all learnt a lot about water quality and how fast flowing water is always healthier than water that isn't moving too much!

Whakarewa Run

On Monday we had the Whakarewa Trophy run.

This happens every year at Te Mahia School and is scheduled on low tide so that tamariki can run along the sand most of the run, before coming up onto the road.

Room3 ran along the sand, and only had to run a short distance on the road, where we caught the bus quickly back to school to help cheer on our senior runners!

We have some very talented runners in our school, and it was obvious!

A very big KA PAI to Waitama who came 3rd in the junior school! He wasn't just racing Room 3 people, but also some Room 2 people too!

We had some awesome place getters who had some very awesome running times.
A big congratulations to all our tamariki who participated, you all did very well!

Congratulations Te Mahia tamariki!

As you may all be aware we are a Bronze Enviro-school, which means we pay a lot of attention to creating a sustainable environment for the future. We are very involved in our environment, especially the Whangawehi Awa, and we have been working very hard all year on new and exciting ways to improve the environmental quality of Te Mahia.

So this last week we have been working our little hands off getting ourselves prepared for our Enviro-School Celebration.

Today we celebrated with invited VIP's from around the community and further afar. They were invited to come to Te Mahia Kura and see if they thought our hard work conserving the environment was enough to make us a SILVER envrio-school! And guess what!!!

They all agreed that YES we are very worthy of being A SILVER ENVIRO-SCHOOL!

So a very big CONGRATULATIONS to all Te Mahia Kura tamariki who have worked very hard at making this happen, as well as all those beautiful people out in the community who constantly give their time to us here at school. Without all of you this would not be happening.

After the decision was made thisafternoon, all the tamariki had an ice cream to celebrate, and then when  our award arrives we will have to have another party!

If you are around Mahia and want to come and visit our Kura please do and come and see all the hard work we put into our school, as well as our community.

Below are some photos of today!
Ka Pai tamariki!

Super Learners in Room 3

This term in Room 3 we are learning about money. This is very important with our school gala happening this term.

We have big plans for the Gala and really want to keep our school pool open.

As well as preparing for Gala we have been doing our class chores and getting "paid". This has been teaching us all about working hard for money. Our money is fake money, but at the end of term we will have a Room 3 shop where we can buy things with our money.

Room 3 have been working extra hard to get their classroom jobs done, and are making sure it is a job well done so that they get their full pay. If they do half a job they get half their pay and if they don't do their job they don't get any pay. They have secret "banks" where they put their pay and they are very keen to count their money at the end of each day.

We have created our list of jobs as a class and these were pulled out of a hat to decide who was doing what. Some of the jobs are big responsibilities, such as using Miss D'Ath's keys to open the ipad cupboard, and to open the resource room for fruit. Room 3 tamariki have all stepped up to these responsibilities and at the end of the day are very proud of doing a job well.

We are all looking forward to our store at the end of the term. We will keep you posted about how it all goes.

Envrio Schools Kai Moana Education

Today we had an amazing enviroschools trip.

It began with a trip down to Whangawehi where we met the Aurora, and their crayfish catch for the day. Rob and Selwyn where there to show us what they had caught for the day, and showed us how they loaded them onto the back of the truck.

From there they drove them around to Nanny Doi's house where they have special crayfish pools. These pools are where the crayfish stay before being trucked down to Wellington, and from there they fly out to China.

Once we had had a look at the crayfish in the pools, and asked Rob and Selwyn questions about the crayfish, we wandered around to the fishing club for lunch.

After lunch we had three different activities to head off and do. With Whaea Jenni we pretended to catch some "laminated" fish. We had to identify what fish we had caught and find our whether or not it was a legal size.
With Aunty Ali we learnt about how to get Paua correctly, and without harming them. We even had turns at shucking the paua. Aunty Ali had even cooked up some Paua for us all to sample! It was delicious.
Nanny Rae was very kindly monitoring us all on the rocks and making sure we didn't disappear around the point. We had a lot of fun finding limpets, and crabs, as well as avoiding the incoming tide!

It was so nice for us all to get out in this beautiful spring weather and make the most of all that is around us here in beautiful Mahia! We are all very lucky that all the information we learnt, we can now put into practice when we all go to collect our own kai moana.

Waituna West and Cleo's Prize

Last week we had a visit from Waituna West School from Fielding.

They are on their school camp at the moment, travelling all around the East Cape! And it's not just one classroom, it is their whole school!

Their first stop was our school. We welcomed them with a powhiri, and then they spent the day doing fun water activities with Room 1.

They enjoyed their time with us and were impressed with our friendly and welcoming students!
Ka pai Te Mahia School!

In other news....

Cleo loves watching What Now. She entered a competition on What Now to create a minion. Her minion was a Maori Minion and it was awesome! So awesome that she won the competition. Her prize turned up at school the other day and check out what it was!! Very cool!
