Pancakes and Daffodil Day

Last week we had a whole lot of fun.

We are learning about fractions at the moment, and how to make halves and quarters evenly out of a shape.

We decided that the best way to practise making fractions would be to make pancakes. Before we started making the pancakes we practiced on our paper.  We practiced folding our paper so that the edges matched. Once we had done that we knew that our fractions were even- which is a very important word when learning about fractions.

Once we had mastered creating our fractions on our paper circles we started making the pancakes. We worked very hard on "doubling" our recipe so that there would be enough pancakes for us all. Then we took turns to measure our ingredients.

Then it was time to cook them!

After cutting our pancakes into quarters we decided what we would like on our quarters. Some people had banana on 1 quarter and maple syrup on the rest. Some people had half maple syrup and half banana and some people had banana AND maple syrup on their "whole" pancake!

After our exciting day of pancakes we had Friday, which was of course daffodil day! We were all dressed up beautifully! And our little school managed to raise $91 for the cancer society!
It was a very colourful day dedicated to a very awesome society!

We hope you all have a good week,

Halfway through the term!

What a cool week we had last week!

First up we had a visit from my good friend Lucy who is an ED Nurse. Lucy came up to share with us all she knows about the body and the heart. She even bought her stethoscope with her so we could all listen to our hearts, our lungs, and even our tummy rumbles!

Lucy explained to us that when we breath in, we breath in oxygen, and when we breath out it is carbon dioxide. Oxygen is what trees create, and we need, and carbon dioxide is what we create and trees need... we both work together to keep each other alive!

We have been doing a lot of work on our fractions at the moment. We know that the top number is the numerator, and that the bottom number is the denominator. We also know that the bottom numbers job is to tell us how many pieces our whole is cut into.

We are working hard in these photos to see what fraction these shapes are in.

And on Thursday when the school was out of power we had cross country! And what an awesome day it was. This wasn't just ordinary cross country, it was "literally" cross country. Room 3 kids ran hard and were very impressive with their stamina, and determination. They should all be very proud of how they did.

Jhalena digging it in coming up hill!

Violet battling the hill!

Shayne sticking at it while running up hill!

Rahkai on the final straight.

Lucas with enough energy to grin while he runs!

Elliot pushing through to the end!

Waitama rushing for the finish line!

6 year old boys before they start!

We hope you all have a good week!

Penguins everywhere!

Yesterday we were so fortunate to have an enviroschool day devoted solely to the Little Blue Penguin.

The Little Blue Penguin is a pretty important wee dude. Unfortunately there aren't as many of them around as there used to be in Mahia. This is due to pests! So our big plan, with the Whangawehi Catchment group, is to eradicate these pests and reintroduce these little fellows.

Little Blue Penguins are a little bit lazy so yesterday we spent the day making them some houses, which they can conveniently move straight into. As well as constructing some houses, we also learnt all about penguins, and we even constructed some crafty penguins! (If you are in Wairoa anytime soon our Penguins will be on display on the main street. )

It was a very informative day and we all learnt a lot about the Little Blue Penguin, including they weigh the same as a 1 litre bottle of milk, they don't like sharing their houses, and they have very strong beaks which they use to crack open barnacles.

Thanks to those of you who came and enjoyed yourselves alongside us all!

What we've been up to

How are we already into Week 4?

We have been having a lot of fun here in Room 3. This term we are learning about how our bodies work.
We know that the heart is a muscle in our body that pumps blood all around it.

We also spent Te Wiki o Te Reo learning some of our body parts in Te Reo.
We used this video here to learn " Mahunga, Pakihiwi, Puku, Hope, Waewae".

After we learnt these names we traced around ourselves on paper and labelled ourselves with all our body parts. If you are around school in the next week come and see our cool people hanging on our windows.

We have also had Kylie from the library come and visit us. We are doing the Wairoa Library Winter Warmers project, so Kylie had come to see how our book reviews were going! 100% of Room 3 had completed their book reviews so we all received a brand new packet of playing cards!

The very talented Jhalena competed in the Wairoa Schools Speech Competition last week and she was awesome. She had to speak in front of a very big crowd and she was very confident and spoke nice and clearly. Ka pai Jhalena!

We hope you are all staying nice and warm in this cold weather!
