Multiplication Mission

Day 1 of school and Room 3 tamariki were out on the netball court with coloured chalk writing and learning multiplication facts and the younger tamariki were learning to skip count in two's forwards and backwards to 20. The older tamariki were writing all the multiplication basic facts that they knew, and some tamariki were working out multiplication equations by forming groups of depending on the numbers they were multiplying.
Prior to their outdoor math learning we had a lot of discussion about the word multiplication and what it meant. The older tamariki said words like times and groups of, other words I mentioned were sets of, lots of, repeated addition, multiply and double. It is always important to go through the language and vocabulary involved in the learning area.
I must say a lot of chalk was used and the tamariki had fun, not bad for a first day back!
