Manu Tī - Taonga Tākaro (Traditional Māori Game)

Manu Tī is a game traditionally played where opponents tried to snatch raukura (feathers) out of each other’s hair (top knots) or from the Tipare (headband). In pairs each person is trying to snatch the feather from another person.
The benefits of the game are it improves reflexes, spatial awareness, reading opponents movements and body language, and peripheral vision. It is also a great way to warm up, whakawhanaungatanga, have a laugh, and generally encourage participation and engagement.

During Te Reo time in class room 3 tamariki each made a tipare using colourful pipe cleaners. Then by placing it on their heads with a feather in front they were all set to go with the game Manu Tī. The rules we had were you weren't allowed to block your opponents hands from reaching for your feather but were only allowed to move your body, your legs had to stay in place too. Talk about a challenge as each tamariki was eager to get their opponents feather. A lot of laughter from everyone! Not a bad first go at the game Manu Tī  Room 3.
